The Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain (VWSGB) is holding a third essay
competition in memory of acclaimed Virginia Woolf scholar and VWSGB Executive
Council member Julia Briggs, who died in August 2007.
The competition is open to members and non-members
(except for the Executive Council and Editorial Committee of the VWSGB, the
judges, and families of the above). Entries must be posted to Ruth Webb, 15 Southcote Road, Woodside, London SE25 4RG, to arrive by 1 October
2012.
The competition rules and entry form are provided below. Entrants should
read these carefully and return the
enclosed signed form by post, with three Ôhard copiesÕ of their entry.
If you have any queries or would like another entry
form, please email ruthwebb@talk21.com
Please note that student
membership of the VWSGB costs only £10 for those at UK addresses and £15 for
those at overseas addresses, per calendar year.
The essay should
be written in response to the following:
ÔI want to give the whole of the present
societyÕ (Diary, Vol. 4, p. 151)
Discuss WoolfÕs
representation of social and/or political concerns in any of her writings.
It should be
given a title of the entrantÕs choosing, and should be
between 2,000 and 2,500 words in length. The essay must be the original work of
the named entrant, and previously unpublished in print or any other medium.
Student coursework is acceptable. No
late hard copies sent by post
will be accepted, even if an e-mail copy has been received before 1
October 2012.
Entrants should supply THREE typed copies of the essay on A4 paper, printed on one side
only, double-spaced (or 1.5) and in a font size no smaller than 10-point. The
VWSGB would be grateful if entrants would also send a copy of their
entries by e-mail attachment, so that shortlisted essays may be sent to the
editorial committee of the Virginia Woolf
Bulletin for consideration.
The competition will be judged by
eminent Woolf scholars Maggie
Humm and Anna Snaith, and by VWSGB Vice-Chair and Woolf biographer Ruth
Webb. The decision of the judges is final. The VWSGB reserves the right
not to award the prize if, in the judgesÕ opinion, none of the entries attains
the required standard. Otherwise the winner will be contacted in mid-December
2012.
The winner will receive a cheque for £250, presented at the VWSGBÕs AGM in
central London, early in April 2013, and the winning essay will be published in
the Virginia Woolf Bulletin. If the winner is unable to attend the AGM,
the prize will be sent by secure mail.
No
entry will be accepted without the signed entry form below, which should be
attached to the first page of the first Ôhard copyÕ of the essay.
There should be no personal details on the essay pages themselves. The VWSGB
cannot return entries. Acknowledgement of receipt BY POST can only be given to
UK entrants, and only if they supply an SAE containing the confirmation slip below.
All
entrants may email ruthwebb@talk21.com if
they would like acknowledgement BY EMAIL.
