center;\"><em><strong>Organisation details<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <em>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019Etudes Woolfiennes<\/em> is delighted to be welcoming Christine Froula, Laura Marcus and David Bradshaw to give keynote lectures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The conference will be held at the Maison m\u00e9diterran\u00e9enne des sciences de l\u2019homme, at Jas-de-Bouffan, a 10-minute bus ride from the Rotonde (the central fountain in the city centre).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The conference will begin on Friday September 17th at\u00a0 9 a.m. Two full days of conferences in plenary sessions (Friday) and parallel sessions (Saturday) are planned (see programme above).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A performance of \u00ab\u00a0Vanessa\u00a0 and Virginia \u00bb, a stage adaptation by Elizabeth Wright of the novel <em>Vanessa and Virginia <\/em>by Susan Sellers will take place on the Friday live\u201d (\u201cHow It Strikes a Contemporary\u201d,1925).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Si \u00eatre contemporain, ce n\u2019est pas adh\u00e9rer aux pr\u00e9tentions du pr\u00e9sent mais bien plut\u00f4t, comme Giorgio Agamben le d\u00e9finit dans son essai \u00ab\u00a0Qu\u2019est-ce que le contemporain?\u00a0\u00bb, saisir son temps depuis une certaine distance, qu\u2019en est-il de la contemporan\u00e9it\u00e9 de Woolf, \u00e0 la fois par rapport \u00e0 son \u00e9poque et par rapport \u00e0 notre pr\u00e9sent ?\u00a0 Dans quelle mesure ses \u00e9crits, tant fictionnels que non-fictionnels, pensent-ils et mettent-ils en \u0153uvre cette inactualit\u00e9, cette non-co\u00efncidence avec son temps qui permet pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 un auteur\u00a0 d\u2018en \u201cvoir les t\u00e9n\u00e8bres\u201d, d\u2019en \u201cpercevoir l\u2019obscurit\u00e9\u201d ?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Il s\u2019agira tout particuli\u00e8rement d\u2019explorer la pens\u00e9e de la modernit\u00e9 chez Woolf. Comment ses textes attestent-ils autant la barbarie que la culture de son si\u00e8cle ? Comment mettent-ils le pr\u00e9sent en relation avec le pass\u00e9 et l\u2019avenir? Et comment aujourd\u2019hui \u00eatre \u201ccontemporains\u201d de ses textes, y voir les figures de notre si\u00e8cle et de notre maintenant? Comment d\u00e9finir dans nos lectures ces moments o\u00f9 le pr\u00e9sent de l\u2019\u00e9criture woolfienne nous devient contemporain, et, \u00e0 ce titre, g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur de textes futurs ? Ce sont quelques questions parmi d\u2019autres, qui peuvent nous inciter \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la contemporan\u00e9it\u00e9 de Virginia Woolf en m\u00eame temps qu\u2019\u00e0 la n\u00f4tre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Interroger Woolf en tant que contemporaine nous invite donc \u00e0 reconsid\u00e9rer l\u2019histoire hors du d\u00e9roulement chronologique et \u00e0 voir dans le pr\u00e9sent un lieu de rencontres entre les temporalit\u00e9s, entre les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations \u2014 autrement dit, \u00e0 penser le pr\u00e9sent selon la tension que Woolf \u00e9nonce \u00e0 la fin de l\u2019essai \u201cHow it Strikes a Contemporary\u201d:\u201cscan the horizon; see the past in relation to the future; and so prepare the way for masterpieces to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/etudes-woolfiennes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/p-Insert-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2114\" src=\"http:\/\/etudes-woolfiennes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/p-Insert-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">A Contemporary Woolf<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cOn or about December 1910, human character changed\u201d : one century after this new beginning, we invite you to reflect on Virginia Woolf\u2019s relation to the contemporary, and on how she is inscribed in time, and in her time, \u201cbeing that which we are, that which we have made, that in which we live\u201d (\u201cHow It Strikes a Contemporary\u201d,1925).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If being contemporary means not abiding by the\u00a0 strictures of the present, but rather, as Giorgio Agamben maintains in his essay \u00ab\u00a0What is the Contemporary\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb grasping the meaning of one\u2019s time from outside, what does this imply about Woolf\u2019s contemporaneity, both in terms of her own era, and in terms of our present\u00a0? To what extent does her\u00a0 fictional as well as non-fictional work reflect on or engage with those forms of untimeliness or out-of-timeness which enable an author to \u00ab\u00a0see its shadows\u00a0\u00bb or \u00ab\u00a0perceive its obscurity\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Our principal aim will be to explore the ways in which Woolf conceives of modernity. How do her texts display an awareness of the barbarity as well as of the culture of her century\u00a0? How do they relate the present to the past and the future\u00a0? And how might we today be \u00ab\u00a0contemporaries\u00a0\u00bb of her texts, and see in them figurations of our own century, our own times\u00a0? How can we as readers define those moments in the text when Woolf\u2019s writing becomes contemporary now, and as such generates works to come\u00a0?
